ABOUT

I have been painting California landscapes since 1998. Taking the less obvious, and exaggerating the mood, colors, and tension between the good, the bad and the ugly. Actually, that film and a few other things, influence the outcome. Big on music while I work: Mogwai, old New Order, Kraftwerk, Pink Floyd, Reggae from the 1972-1980 era (King Tubby, Barrington Levy, Big Youth, Black Uhuru, Scientist, Augustus Pablo) Classical, Miles, Coltrane, Bill Evans, Chet, Brian Eno, Harold Budd, shit, even Delta Blues, and 70’s soul… get spun while I work in my studio.

I only work from photos I take. This way I have a personal relationship with the subject, and witnessed what was happening that day. I go home and get comfortable with a bit of whisky, music, and create in peace. No more plein-air; don’t have the free-time to be outside for long stretches away from home (I have a young son)…

Yes, I get distracted. What starts as a painting session, may end up playing catch with my boys, or recording a musical idea that came in. Shit, How to stay focused has always been a challenge. ADD?

My musical background can pull me away from painting. Which to prioritize?
